It’s been recruiting time here at the university…prospective students come to interview with professors and mingle with current students to decide if the university program is a good fit for them.
I happened to be walking behind a group of them, prospective students and their graduate student hosts. Of a group of 12 people, there was only one male and he was a host. That sight made me do a little cheer inside my head.
Lately, I’ve been getting involved with and reading more about STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education and have been reminded of the deficiencies in the number of women choosing degrees in those subjects and their success rates when compared with men. It can seem like a losing battle. Seeing the sight of those women, perched on the beginning of their scientific careers was proof that change isn’t impossible.
